"Achill Sound" on UK's Home Stage

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Larew's poem, Achill Sound, was selected as an entry in the UK's 2024 Home State pFITE competition. Home Stage is a Norfolk-based initiative that promotes poetry from near and far. This year's pFITE competition is fierce -- all for a 10,000 Pounds UK prize. Wow!

Achill Sound was written while Larew was a writer-in-residence on Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland. It first appeared in Words for the Wild, then elsewhere including in Larew's 2021 collection, Mud Ajar (Atmosphere Press). It was recently set to music by Geoff Wilson.

Just a couple of background notes -- To get to the island, travelers cross Achill Sound. And, the Irish Potato Famine lasted from 1845-1849.
